WHERE CHIMNEYS FALL for solo oboe (1980)
The subtitle of this piece is 'sequence and meditation on the paintings of L.S.Lowry' a work written during a rush of composition activity in the autumn of 1980. Another work reflecting the composer's interest in and concern for the environment and which takes the listener through an exhibition of Lowry works. The title refers to the demolition of vast areas of 19th century industrial development in northern England.
The work was first performed by Jonathan Small at Charterhouse in 1981, and subsequently taken up by Nicholas Daniel and Francois Leleux.
