SPRING SONATA for violin and harp (1990)
This work was commissioned by renowned Welsh harpist Elinor Bennett and first performed by her with Edward Davies in Bangor in November 1990. It is undoubtedly one of the composer's most personal works. It was written during a period when the composer felt a strong sense of personal freedom in the Welsh border hills, and at a time of great changes in Europe. The music, positively diatonic, literally 'breathes out' - the work possesses a real warmth, ebulliance and sense of joy throughout - with the occasional melancholic glance back at the past.
In 1995 the young duo Lucy Jeal (violin) and Susan Blair (harp) gave a memorable performance in the special surroundings of Pilleth Church during the Presteigne Festival.
