TESS (1982)

Inspired by a part of Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles, this work was commissioned by Vernon Handley and the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra, being first performed by them in May 1983.
Far from idyllic and pastoral, this demanding work depicts the lonely walk Tess makes to find her lost lover, leaving in dead of night on foot, her emotional torment and her eventual demise at the hands of the law.
